This year alone, Tea will have released four different books. Tea's third book, "The Chelsea Whistle," was nominated for a Lambda Literary Award in the autobiography category, and was selected by The Chronicle as one of the top 100 books of 2002. "Valencia" captured the 2000 Lambda Literary Award for Best Lesbian Fiction, was selected by the Voice Literary Supplement as one of the top 25 books of the year, and earned an award from the Rona Jaffe Foundation for young female writers. Since her mid-20s, Tea has released a book every two years, each garnering more attention than the one before. She has acquired a significant following - thanks in part to her visibility and her prolific output. These things happen with increased regularity, as Tea's star rises. Taken aback, Tea just smiles and stammers, "Thanks!" She is a crazy quilt of clashing styles: a patchwork brown leather coat, purple suede boots, a lace print skirt and blouse.Ī young woman in hippie attire approaches her briefly, and puts a hand to her own heart. Her pixieish face is lent gravitas by a pair of black nerd-glasses, upswept to catlike tips. Tea bears more than a passing resemblance to Gilda Radner's Emily Litella character - if Emily had been liberally festooned with tattoos.
